PCP Maintenance & Cleaning Gear
What needs cleaning on a PCP, how often, and the four products you actually need. The honest maintenance shortlist.
The quick answer
PCPs need dramatically less maintenance than centerfire rifles — no powder residue, no copper fouling, no aggressive solvents. The maintenance picture for most PCPs is two activities done occasionally:
- Pull a patch through the bore every few hundred shots to remove lead build-up. Patchworm kits make this safe and fast.
- Apply silicone oil/grease to seals and O-rings every few months. Pump O-rings, bottle O-rings, fill probe O-rings — all need periodic re-lubrication to stay flexible and sealed.
That’s the entire maintenance picture for the typical PCP owner. For the more involved owner, occasional exterior wipe-downs with Ballistol protect the rifle’s finish, and moly paste on the bottle threads keeps the high-pressure metal contact reliable.
The 14 maintenance SKUs the partner stocks cover all of this — pick the kit that matches your caliber, the silicone oil + grease you’ll use periodically, and a bottle of Ballistol for general care. Total maintenance investment for a year: about $60-80 CAD.

What to look for in a pcp maintenance & cleaning gear.
- ✓PCPs need less cleaning than centerfire — but the right cleaning A PCP doesn't burn powder, so there's no copper or carbon fouling in the bore. You don't need solvents, brushes, or aggressive cleaning compounds. What you do need: occasional dry-patch bore cleaning to remove lead build-up from pellet contact, and periodic silicone lubrication of internal seals and O-rings. That's the whole maintenance picture for most PCPs.
- ✓Patchworm vs traditional rod cleaning Patchworm is a pull-through cleaning system — a weighted string that you pull through the barrel from breech to muzzle, with a patch attached. No rod, no risk of crown damage, packs into a pocket. The Patchworm kits at the partner are sized for .177 specifically or for .22/.25 calibers. For PCP work, this is the right tool — traditional rod cleaning is overkill and risks crown damage.
- ✓Silicone oil for internal seals; silicone grease for O-rings Silicone oil (30ml or Super Lube 4oz) is the right lubricant for hand pump pistons, regulator internals, and anywhere a thin lubricant is needed. Silicone grease (100% silicone grease 15ml) is the right lubricant for O-rings — it stays in place without migrating. Don't substitute petroleum-based oils on PCPs; they degrade the rubber seals.
- ✓Ballistol for the exterior and traditional cleaning Ballistol is the European cleaning/preservation oil that's been used since 1904 — works on metal, wood, leather, and rubber without damaging any of them. Use it for exterior rifle wipe-downs after a wet field session, for storage protection between sessions, and as a general-purpose cleaner. 4oz bottle covers a year for most owners; 16oz for shop-grade use.
- ✓Moly paste is the specialized lubricant Air Venturi Moly Metal-to-Metal Paste is for high-pressure metal contact points — most specifically the bottle-to-rifle threads on bottle-fed PCPs. Apply once when threading on a new bottle; reapply every 6-12 months. Skip on dovetail-rail attachments where over-lubrication is a problem.
