The Hunt & Live take

Why this scope earns the pick

The Discovery HD 2-12×24 sits at a sweet spot most starter scopes don’t hit. 2× minimum magnification is genuinely useful at 10-yard backyard pest control range — most 4-16× scopes are unusable at close distances because the magnification is too high. The side-focus parallax that goes down to 5 yards is critical: every other scope in this price range starts parallax adjustment at 25 or 50 yards, which means at 10 yards you’re shooting through a blurry reticle.

The first focal plane (FFP) reticle is the feature that elevates this from “good starter scope” to “scope you keep.” FFP means the reticle scales with magnification, so your holdover marks stay accurate at every zoom level. This is the standard for tactical and competition scopes — finding it at this price tier is the genuine value play.

What it pairs with

This scope fits the Snowpeak Lynx Gen 3 Picatinny rail directly with the 20mm Picatinny medium rings (select at checkout). For dovetail-rail rifles (older Stormrider, PR900 originals), select the 11mm Dovetail medium rings. The 30mm tube requires 30mm rings — don’t try to make 1-inch rings fit.

Ring choice at checkout

The partner ships the scope with your choice of mounting rings at no extra cost. 20mm Picatinny medium is the right pick for the Snowpeak Lynx Gen 3 (the rifle we feature in The Perfect PCP Starter Kit) and for any rifle with a modern Picatinny rail. 20mm Picatinny hi if you have a tall front sight or thread protector that blocks low rings. 11mm Dovetail for older dovetail-rail rifles.

Honest trade-offs

The 2-12× range tops out at 12× — if you plan to shoot beyond 50 yards routinely you’ll want the Discovery MS 4-16×44 SFIR instead. The 24mm objective is small — at dusk/dawn the picture gets dim before a 44mm objective scope would. And FFP reticles can feel busy at high magnification if you’re new to scopes — if you’re switching from a hunting scope, expect a brief learning curve.

But for a first PCP scope upgrade from the bundled Snowpeak 3-9×40, this is the right one.
