The Hunt & Live take
Why this rifle earns the pick
The Max 1 is built around the slug / heavy pellet use case — not adapted to it. The dual-cylinder design (top cylinder encases the barrel) gives you 550cc of total air capacity across two constant-pressure chambers, which means the regulator has a much larger plenum to draw from for each shot. The result is more energy per shot at any given regulator pressure, which is exactly what slug shooters need.
At 1100 fps in .25 with heavy slugs, this is the partner’s hardest-hitting bottle PCP at standard configuration. The externally adjustable regulator means you can tune set pressure to match your slug weight without disassembly.
What it pairs with
Slug shooting requires precision optics and the right ammo selection:
- Scope: Discovery ED-PRS 5-25×56 Gen 2 is the right pick — high magnification, FFP, parallax adjustable
- Mounts: Discovery 20 MOA Tactical for the elevation budget you’ll need at slug ranges
- Ammo: Heavy slugs in .22 or .25 — the rifle is wasted on light pellets
- Fill station: Tuxing 3L Tank + Fill Station — 30 MPa fill pressure is at the upper limit of comfortable hand-pump use
Caliber choice
- .22 — most pellet/slug selection, best balance of energy and ammo cost
- .25 — more energy per shot, the choice for serious pest work or larger game
For slug shooting specifically, .22 is the right starting point — wider slug selection in Canada, more affordable practice, less drop than .25 at moderate ranges.
Honest trade-offs
Slug rifles are specialized. This is not a great pellet plinker — the long barrel and slug-optimized configuration are wasted if you just want backyard pest control. Buy the Lynx for that use case.
3.7 kg is heavy. At 8.2 lb without optics, the Max 1 is on the heavy end for field-carry hunting. It’s built for bench/bipod work, not all-day still-hunts.
.177 isn’t available despite Snowpeak’s spec sheet listing it — the partner stocks .22 and .25 only.
Canadian PAL required. Email your PAL photo to support@airgunarcheryfun.ca after purchase. US buyers don’t need a license.
