H&N Slug HP .22 — .217 cal, 21gr, 200ct

Quick take
The most-ordered H&N .22 slug at the partner — 19 orders, 100% positive. At 21 grains it's the lightest .22 slug H&N makes, which puts it in the same use-case bracket as the Nielsen 17.5/20.2gr: mid-power regulated PCPs (25-30 ft-lbs) that don't quite have the gas to drive a 27-30gr slug to useful slug velocity. The H&N differentiator vs. Nielsen is consistency tolerance — H&N's German manufacturing yields tighter weight and dimensional variance than most slug makers. Currently out of stock; restock cycle varies.

The Hunt & Live take
Why this slug earns the pick
H&N is the German premium counterweight to Nielsen in the partner’s slug catalog. Where Nielsen offers a wider range of weights and head sizes at mid-tier pricing, H&N tightens the manufacturing tolerance — a hand-sorted box of H&N slugs typically shows lower weight variance and tighter dimension scatter than the same count from any non-premium maker.
The 21gr is the most-ordered H&N .22 slug at the partner, which matches what you’d expect: it’s H&N’s lightest .22 slug, and the buyer most likely to be experimenting with H&N is the buyer running a mid-power regulated rifle who wants H&N consistency without committing to the heavier slugs the rifle can’t really drive.
The .217 head diameter is the modern default — most current-production slug-rated .22 PCPs (Snowpeak Max 1, JTS Airacuda PRS Max, FX Impact .22) bore around .216-.218, with .217 being the most common shooter sweet spot.
What rifles it pairs with
- Snowpeak Max 1 (slug-rated) — the natural .22 home for a 21gr slug at ~900fps
- JTS Airacuda PRS Max (slug-rated) — the consumer-priced slug platform, 21gr is in the sweet spot
- FX Impact / Crown .22 (slug-rated) — the premium platform; H&N matches the FX accuracy ceiling
- Higher-tune Snowpeak M60B — if .22, slug-rated, and 28+ ft-lbs
Will not work with: any non-slug-rated pellet barrel (Lynx Gen 3, base Avenger, base JTS Airacuda, Stormrider).
Twist rate / barrel match
A 21-grain slug needs the same 1:18-or-faster twist as any other slug — it’s not light enough to be forgiving of a slow-twist pellet barrel. Verify the barrel before ordering. The shortlist of slug-rated .22 platforms at the partner is small: Snowpeak Max 1, JTS Airacuda PRS Max, and the FX rifles. Everything else is pellet-only.
If you’re buying H&N for the first time and your rifle previously shot Nielsen well at .217, start with this .217 head. If you’ve been getting better Nielsen groups at .2175, the .218 H&N Slug HP is the closer match.
Honest trade-offs
Currently out of stock. H&N restocks via the partner’s import schedule — not predictable, typically 6-12 weeks between waves. Email Wes at the partner for ETA, or run Nielsen 17.5gr as the in-stock fallback at the same weight class.
Hollow point only — no domed option in H&N .22. The HP nose expands on impact (good for hunting), but slightly less accurate than a domed slug past 75 yards. For pure target work past 75y, Nielsen offers more profile options.
Premium pricing vs. Nielsen. Expect 30-50% more per slug for the H&N — the buyer pays for the tighter tolerance. If you’re still in the “do I like slugs at all” phase, Nielsen at half the price is the right starting point. Move to H&N once you know the rifle, the diameter, and the use case.
