Quick take

The partner's most-ordered H&N .25 slug — 13 orders, 100% positive. The Grizzly is H&N's flagship .25 hunting slug — 31 grains of swaged hollowpoint, designed for "long range high velocity accurate shooting" as the partner puts it. At 31gr it sits in the middle of the .25 slug weight spectrum: heavy enough to deliver hunting energy at 50-75 yards, light enough to be driven by a 45+ ft-lb regulated PCP without massive drop. Premium German manufacturing tolerance. Currently out of stock.

The Hunt & Live take

Why this slug earns the pick

H&N’s Grizzly is the hunting slug in H&N’s .25 lineup — heavier than the Slug HP II (which exists in 34 and 36gr variants but those need 55+ ft-lbs to perform). At 31 grains the Grizzly is the most-orderable balance point in the catalog: enough mass for real terminal energy on small game (squirrel, raccoon, fox, beaver), light enough to be driven by a 45-ft-lb regulated .25 without unmanageable holdover at 50 yards.

H&N’s catalog blurb on this SKU calls it a “slug like pellet for long range high velocity accurate shooting” — that’s the right framing. Past 50 yards, where pellet wind drift becomes the limiting factor, this is the .25 ammo to step up to. Under 35 yards, pellets remain more accurate for the same dollar.

The Grizzly profile is somewhere between domed and HP in nose shape — H&N’s “Grizzly” line is their specific hunting-slug profile with controlled expansion design. It’s still a true slug (1:18 twist required); the name predates the broader airgun-slug category.

What rifles it pairs with

  • Snowpeak Max 1 .25 (slug-rated, high-power tune) — the natural Canadian-power-class home for 31gr at ~880fps
  • JTS Airacuda PRS Max .25 (slug-rated, 45+ ft-lbs) — consumer-priced platform for this exact slug weight
  • FX Crown / Impact .25 (slug-rated, 55+ ft-lbs configurable) — overshoots energy required; will deliver excellent groups
  • Snowpeak M60B .25 in slug-barrel variant tuned to 45+ ft-lbs

Will not work with: any sub-40 ft-lb .25 PCP (insufficient power for 31gr to reach useful velocity), any pellet-only barrel.

Twist rate / barrel match

1:18 twist or faster is mandatory. Equally important: 45+ ft-lbs of rifle power. A 31-grain .25 slug from a 30 ft-lb rifle exits the barrel at 660fps, drops 6" at 50 yards, and groups at 2 MOA — that’s not what you bought slugs for.

If your rifle makes 35-40 ft-lbs, drop down to the Nielsen 26.8gr as the right-power match. The Grizzly is for the 45+ ft-lb class — Snowpeak Max 1, JTS Airacuda PRS Max, FX Crown/Impact .25, and similar.

Head size: the partner page doesn’t specify the Grizzly’s exact diameter, but H&N’s .25 slug line typically runs .250 — at the upper end of the .25 slug bore spec. If your rifle previously shot a .249 Nielsen well, the Grizzly’s likely .250 may or may not be the better match. Test before stocking up.

Honest trade-offs

Currently out of stock. H&N restock cycles via the partner’s import schedule — not predictable. Email Wes for ETA.

Smaller box (150 vs 250 for Nielsen). You’re paying premium per-slug pricing for a smaller count. For a confirmed hunting load this is fine; for testing a new rifle, a Nielsen sampler is the cheaper trial.

Power-class dependent. This slug only delivers its rated performance from a 45+ ft-lb regulated PCP with a slug-rated barrel. Under 45 ft-lbs, the lighter Nielsen 26.8gr is the right answer. Over 55 ft-lbs, the heavier H&N HP II 34gr or 36gr starts to make sense.
