Nighttime EV Charging Options

When it comes to charging electric vehicles (EVs) at night, most people rely on grid power, but for off-grid enthusiasts and those living in areas with frequent power outages, alternative power sources are necessary. Level 2 EV chargers, which can deliver up to 19.2 kW of power, are designed to operate on 240-volt electrical circuits. However, they still require electricity to function, and a grid connection is typically not available after dark.

Battery Banks and Generators

To charge EVs at night, a battery bank or a generator can be used to provide the necessary power. A battery bank consists of multiple deep cycle batteries connected in series and parallel to provide a high capacity and voltage. For example, a 10 kW battery bank might consist of 24 x 12V deep cycle batteries, which can be charged during the day and discharged at night to power the EV charger. Alternatively, a portable generator can be used to provide power for the charger. A 5 kW generator, for instance, can charge an EV in about 2-3 hours, depending on the vehicle’s charging requirements.

Solar Charging Integration

For those living in areas with abundant sunlight, solar charging can be a viable option for nighttime EV charging. A solar panel array can be connected to a battery bank to charge the batteries during the day, which can then be used to power the EV charger at night. By integrating solar charging with a battery bank and a Level 2 EV charger, it’s possible to charge an EV for free at night, reducing reliance on grid power and lowering energy costs. To illustrate, a 5 kW solar panel array can charge a 10 kW battery bank in about 8 hours, providing enough power for an overnight EV charge.
