How to Identify Male and Female Turkeys in the Field?

Visual Cues

When observing turkeys in the field, take note of the male’s vibrant plumage. A tom turkey’s feathers are often a deeper shade of red, with a distinctive iridescent sheen on the tail, neck, and head. These colors can range from a deep, rich red to a bright, fire engine red. In contrast, the female turkey’s feathers appear duller, with a brownish hue that may be flecked with gray or tan. It’s essential to remember that hens may display some red or copper tones on their necks and heads, but these are typically less vibrant than those seen on toms.

Vocalizations

One of the most reliable ways to identify a tom turkey is through its vocalization. Male turkeys are known for their distinctive gobbling calls, which can be loud, raspy, and often repeated in a series. Hens, on the other hand, tend to make softer, chirping or clucking sounds. If you hear a loud, repetitive gobble, it’s likely a tom turkey. However, keep in mind that young toms may not yet have developed their full gobbling capabilities, so it’s essential to rely on a combination of visual and auditory cues when identifying male turkeys.

Body Size and Posture

Toms are generally larger and more muscular than hens, which can be an important distinguishing characteristic, particularly in the early spring when both males and females are still developing their plumage. Look for a larger, more imposing figure with a broader chest and a more assertive posture. Hens, on the other hand, tend to be smaller and more compact, often with a more subdued demeanor. While body size alone may not be a definitive indicator of sex, when combined with the other characteristics mentioned above, it can be a valuable tool in identifying male turkeys in the field.
