How to create a simple emergency plan for kids?

Establishing a Communication Plan

Designate a unique emergency contact number for each child to call when separated from their guardian. This could be a trusted relative, neighbor, or emergency contact. Make sure the child knows how to dial the contact number using a landline or cell phone. Include a backup number in case the primary contact is unreachable. Practice the phone number with the child by having them call or text the designated contact.

Preparing Go-Bags and Meeting Points

Prepare a go-bag with essential items such as a change of clothes, water, snacks, first aid kit, and important documents. Store the go-bag in an easily accessible location, such as a closet or under a bed. Designate a meeting point outside the home, such as a nearby landmark or a trusted neighbor’s house. Make sure the child knows the location of the go-bag and the meeting point.

Conducting Regular Drills

Conduct regular drills with the child to practice the emergency plan. Start with a simple exercise, such as having the child call or text the emergency contact number. Gradually increase the difficulty by simulating a more complex scenario, such as a natural disaster or home evacuation. Have the child put on their go-bag and meet at the designated meeting point. Review the plan with the child and make adjustments as needed. Conduct drills at least twice a year, or more frequently if the child is old enough to participate.
