Coyote Not Responding To Calls — What Could Be Wrong?

Call Quality and Volume

When coyotes are not responding to electronic or hand calls, it’s often due to a lack of authenticity or volume. Many coyote hunters use calls with built-in amplification or a mouthpiece with a built-in amplifier to produce louder sounds. However, these amplified calls can sometimes sound too artificial or loud, causing coyotes to become wary. Consider using a call with a more natural sound profile, or simply blowing into the call without amplification. A good starting point is to produce 2-3 series of 3-5 yips, followed by a 10-15 second pause, to mimic the natural behavior of a coyote pup or adult.

Caller Technique and Positioning

The caller’s technique plays a crucial role in attracting coyotes. Stand with your back to the wind, as coyotes have a keen sense of smell and can detect human scent easily. Move slowly and calmly to avoid startling the coyotes, and maintain a consistent distance from them. Use a low, steady tone when calling, and avoid over-enthusiastic or inconsistent calling, which can cause coyotes to lose interest. When using a hand call, aim for a consistent pitch and volume by practicing beforehand to develop your skills.

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors such as wind direction, terrain, and vegetation can also affect a coyote’s ability to hear and be drawn to calls. Avoid calling in areas with heavy vegetation or near bodies of water, as these obstacles can muffle or scatter the sound. Also, consider the wind direction: if it’s blowing directly towards you, it can carry your scent and calls away from the coyotes, making it harder for them to detect. When possible, try to find a spot with a relatively flat terrain and minimal vegetation to create an open line of communication between you and the coyotes.
