Understanding the Basics of Sun Movement

The sun’s movement is essential for survival navigation. By knowing how the sun moves across the sky, you can estimate time, determine your direction, and locate landmarks. In areas with dense forests or urban environments, it’s often challenging to see the sun, but understanding its movement patterns helps you navigate using other natural cues like shadows.

Shadow Stick Technique

To navigate using the sun, create a shadow stick by sticking a thin branch or stick into the ground and marking the end of its shadow with a small rock or stick. Wait for a specific period, typically 15-30 minutes, and mark the new end of the shadow. Draw a line between the two marks, and this line will indicate the direction of south (in the Northern Hemisphere). This technique is accurate for daytime navigation, especially when the sun is high in the sky.

Using Natural Cues for Navigation

In addition to the shadow stick technique, observe natural cues like the position of moss, lichen, or tree bark to determine your direction. In the Northern Hemisphere, moss and lichen typically grow on the north side of trees, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they grow on the south side. Similarly, the side of a tree with the most extensive growth of tree bark often indicates the direction of the prevailing wind, which can help you determine your direction.
