Is a Fire Ring Necessary for Mountain Campfires?

When camping in high-altitude areas, fire safety is a top priority. At elevations above 7,000 feet, dead wood and vegetation can be extremely dry, making them highly flammable. A fire ring can contain sparks and embers, reducing the risk of starting a wildfire. It can also help keep the fire contained and make cleanup easier.

Choosing the Right Fire Ring

If you plan to use a fire ring, choose one made from durable materials like metal or stone. Avoid using rings made from plastic or other materials that can melt or crack under high heat. A fire ring should also have a sturdy base to prevent it from tipping over in the wind. Consider using a ring with a built-in cooking grate or grill for added convenience.

Building a Safe Fire

Regardless of whether you use a fire ring or not, building a safe fire is essential in high-altitude areas. Start by clearing a circle of at least three feet in diameter of any flammable materials. Use only dead and downed wood that is dry and free of leaves and other combustible materials. Build your fire in the center of the circle, leaving enough space for airflow. Keep the fire small and controlled, and make sure to fully extinguish it before leaving it unattended.
