The 7mm PRC cartridge has gained popularity among hunters for its flat trajectory and moderate recoil. Ballistics gel testing has shown that controlled expansion bullets in 7mm PRC expand to 0.55-0.60 inch diameters at 100 yards, with penetration depths ranging from 10-12 inches. For example, the Hornady 140-grain ELD-X bullet expanded to 0.58 inches and penetrated 10.5 inches in ballistics gel. In contrast, full metal jacket bullets tend to penetrate deeper, typically 14-16 inches, but may not expand as much.

Performance in Elk

When hunting elk, the 7mm PRC cartridge offers excellent stopping power and penetration. Elk are known for their large size and thick hide, so a deep-penetrating bullet is essential for effective hunting. The 140-grain ELD-X bullet, for instance, has been tested to penetrate 10.5 inches in ballistics gel and expand to 0.58 inches. This level of expansion and penetration should be sufficient to drop an elk quickly and humanely.
