English Pointers are bred for their exceptional noses and love to hunt, but their natural instinct is to follow the bird rather than the scent. To improve nose work, start by exposing your puppy to various scents, toys, and distractions from an early age. Introduce them to around 5-7 different hide locations, including trees, rocks, and grasses, to help them generalize their scent detection skills.

Advanced Training and Conditioning

As your Pointer matures, increase the difficulty of hide locations, incorporating more challenging terrain and longer distances. Train them to work on hot days, as English Pointers are bred for heat tolerance, and practice in areas with dense vegetation to improve their ability to navigate and follow the scent. In field trials, your Pointer should be able to identify the bird within 10-15 seconds of starting the search. Encourage this by using a steady and consistent release command.
