Understanding the Basics of Shadow Stick Navigation

Shadow stick navigation is a simple yet effective method for determining direction and tracking movement. To start, find a straight stick and mark the end with a small notch or mark. At solar noon, when the sun is highest in the sky, place the stick in the ground vertically, with the notch facing the sun. As the sun moves, draw a line on the ground from the bottom of the stick to the end of the notch, and another line from the notch to the end of the shadow. The point where these two lines intersect is approximately south. This method can also be used to estimate the direction of the sun and stars at other times of day.
