Wound Packing Techniques

When packing wounds, it’s crucial to use sterile gauze to prevent introducing bacteria and other contaminants. Apply the gauze in a way that evenly distributes pressure and promotes healing. For example, for a deep laceration, pack the gauze in a way that allows for 1-2 cm of space between the gauze and the wound edges. Secure the gauze with medical tape to prevent it from shifting. Change the gauze dressing every 24-48 hours to maintain wound cleanliness and promote healing.

Sterile gauze is available in various sizes, including 2x2 inches and 4x4 inches, and can be made from different materials, such as cotton or gauze with adhesive strips. Non-sterile gauze, on the other hand, is often used for minor scrapes and can be found in sizes like 3x3 inches and 4x4 inches. Always follow proper wound care and hygiene techniques when using either sterile or non-sterile gauze.
