What Should You Do If Your Plank Catches Fire?

April 5, 2026

Quick Answer

If your plank catches fire, immediately smother the flames with a heat-resistant tray or a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires. Do not use water, as it can cause the wood to splinter and spread the fire. Move the planked food to a safe area.

Containing the Fire

When a plank catches fire, your priority is to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading. This can be achieved by placing a heat-resistant tray or a large heat-resistant plate over the burning plank. The tray will help smother the flames, depriving the fire of oxygen. Do not use a metal tray, as it can conduct heat and spread the fire. A ceramic or heat-resistant plastic tray is ideal.

Extinguishing the Fire

If the flames persist, use a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires. Hold the extinguisher at least 6 feet away from the burning plank, and aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle slowly and steadily, sweeping the nozzle back and forth to cover the entire area of the fire. Make sure to follow the PASS method: Pull the safety pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep the nozzle. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire, as it can cause the fire to spread and make it worse.

Preparing for the Next Use

Once the fire has been extinguished, inspect the plank for any damage. If it has charred or splintered, it’s best to discard it and use a new one. Clean the area thoroughly with soap and water to remove any grease or food residue. Before using the plank again, make sure it’s completely dry and free of any debris. To prevent future fires, make sure to oil the plank regularly and keep an eye on the temperature while cooking.
