Choosing the Right Materials

When constructing a seine, choose durable and water-resistant materials such as nylon or polyester twine for the net frame, and monofilament or multifilament netting for the mesh. The mesh size should be small enough to catch the target species but large enough to allow them to breathe. A 2-inch (5 cm) mesh size is suitable for catching small fish like panfish or trout, while a 3-inch (7.5 cm) mesh size is better for larger fish like bass or catfish.

Seine Construction and Setting

A standard seine consists of a 20-foot (6 m) long lead line, a 20-foot (6 m) long float line, and a 40-foot (12 m) long net bag. The lead line is weighted with rocks or weights to sink the net to the desired depth. The float line is buoyed with floats to keep the net at the surface. To set the seine, wade into the water and slowly begin to pull the net towards you, keeping the lead line on the bottom and the float line at the surface. Pull the net slowly and steadily to avoid tangling the mesh.

Tips for Effective Fishing

When setting the seine, look for areas with a strong current or eddies, where fish tend to congregate. Fish are often caught in areas with submerged structures like rocks, weed beds, or drop-offs. To increase your catch rate, try setting the seine during dawn or dusk when fish are most active. Avoid setting the seine in areas with strong winds or waves, as this can damage the net and make it difficult to retrieve.
