Building a Simple Charcoal Kiln

Line the pit with a mixture of clay, sand, and water, creating a thick, impermeable layer. This will help contain the heat and smoke. Next, place your wood logs in the center of the pit, leaving space for air to flow. You can use rocks or bricks to create a simple chimney, ensuring proper airflow.

Monitoring and Harvesting

Monitor the kiln’s temperature, aiming for a range of 500°F to 1000°F (260°C to 538°C). This process, called pyrolysis, breaks down the wood’s organic matter, releasing volatile gases and leaving behind charcoal. The duration of the heating process depends on the wood’s moisture content, but it usually takes 2-4 hours. After the kiln has cooled, carefully remove the charcoal and store it in an airtight container to preserve its quality.
