Rewarming Techniques and Safety Precautions

When rewarming a person with hypothermia, it’s essential to do so slowly and carefully to avoid causing afterdrop. Afterdrop is a drop in body temperature that can occur when a person with hypothermia is rapidly warmed, causing their body to shiver and lose heat. To avoid afterdrop, rewarming should be done at a rate of no more than 0.5-1°C (0.9-1.8°F) per hour. A portable heating source such as a hand warmer or chemical warmer can be used to assist with rewarming, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take safety precautions to avoid burns.

Severe Cases: When to Seek Medical Attention
