Should you disclose allergies when going on group hunts?

April 5, 2026

Quick Answer

Disclose allergies when going on group hunts.

Importance of Disclosure

When going on group hunts, disclose any allergies immediately to your fellow hunters and the group leader. This information is crucial in case of an emergency. In the United States, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) requires food manufacturers to clearly label products containing common allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. However, when venturing into the wilderness, it’s not just food allergies that need to be considered. Insect stings and plant-based allergens can also pose a significant threat.

Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injectors

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have a history of anaphylaxis, carry an epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, with you at all times. Make sure to inform your fellow hunters and the group leader how to use the device in case of an emergency. When using an EpiPen, inject the medication into the middle of your outer thigh, at a 90-degree angle. This is a critical step in treating anaphylaxis.

Wilderness First Aid and Emergency Protocols

In the event of a severe allergic reaction, stay calm and act quickly. If someone is experiencing anaphylaxis, call 911 or your local emergency number and administer the EpiPen if they have one. If you’re in a remote area with no cell service, use a two-way radio or a satellite phone to call for help. In the meantime, keep the affected person calm and still. Loosen any tight clothing around their neck, and remove any constrictive items. Monitor their vital signs and be prepared to provide basic first aid until medical help arrives.
