Is a CAT tourniquet more effective than a SWAT-T for severe bleeding?

When it comes to severe bleeding, the primary goal is to stop the flow of blood as quickly and effectively as possible. The CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) and SWAT-T (Sawyer Tactical Tourniquet) are two of the most widely used tourniquets in the world. Both devices have their own unique features and applications. The CAT is a more robust device with a wider strap (1.5 inches) and a windlass that allows for precise adjustment, making it more effective for severe bleeding. In contrast, the SWAT-T has a narrower strap (1 inch) and relies on a simpler, one-handed mechanism.

Adjusting the CAT Tourniquet

To apply a CAT tourniquet effectively, follow these steps: locate the femoral artery (just above the knee) or the brachial artery (just above the elbow), and place the CAT device on the limb. Tighten the strap to a pressure of 200-300 mmHg (measured with a blood pressure cuff), then wind the windlass until you feel resistance. The tourniquet is effective when you feel the limb start to “blanch” (turn pale). To secure the tourniquet, tighten the strap an additional 2-3 turns to prevent loosening.

In situations where severe bleeding is present, speed and effectiveness are crucial. The CAT tourniquet is generally more effective than the SWAT-T due to its wider strap and ability to be adjusted more precisely. However, the SWAT-T is still a reliable option in situations where the CAT is not available. Ultimately, the choice of tourniquet depends on the individual’s experience and training. Both devices should be used in conjunction with proper first aid training and medical supervision whenever possible.
