Prerequisites and Selection Process

To enroll in a WFR course, candidates typically need to meet the prerequisites, which may include age, education level, and physical fitness requirements. These courses are usually offered through organizations like the Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) or the Wilderness First Responder Institute (WFRI). Upon submitting an application, the organization may require candidates to provide proof of prerequisites and complete a selection process, which can include a questionnaire, phone or video interview, and/or a medical questionnaire. This process is designed to ensure that students are prepared for the demands of a WFR course.

Course Structure and Content

A typical WFR course consists of 72-80 hours of instruction, which is usually spread over 10-14 days. These courses cover a wide range of topics, including patient assessment, wound management, splinting, and managing medical emergencies like allergic reactions and cardiac arrest. Students will also learn about wilderness-specific considerations, such as altitude sickness, heat and cold injuries, and snake bites. Courses often include both classroom instruction and hands-on practice, where students will practice their skills in a simulated wilderness setting.

Certification and Recertification

Upon completing a WFR course, students will be certified for 2-3 years, depending on the organization. To maintain certification, students must complete continuing education requirements, which typically involve attending a refresher course or completing a certain number of hours of continuing education. Some organizations may also require students to complete a recertification exam or provide proof of continuing education hours.
