This makes caribou a better target for a beginner or those with limited experience.

Hunting Techniques and Gear

Hunting caribou requires less specialized gear than hunting muskoxen. A good quality rifle, binoculars, and camouflage clothing are sufficient for caribou hunting. Muskoxen, however, require more specialized equipment, such as insulated clothing and snowshoes, due to the extreme cold and deep snow. Guided hunts for caribou can be conducted with a minimum of 3-5 days, whereas muskox hunts typically require 7-10 days. Caribou also have a more predictable migration pattern, making it easier to track and hunt them.

Guided Hunts and Licenses

Guided hunts for caribou are more readily available and affordable than those for muskoxen. Licenses for caribou hunting in the Northwest Territories can be obtained through the Northwest Territories Game Council and typically require a $100-$200 fee. Muskoxen, however, have a limited hunting season and require a special permit, which can be obtained through the same council. The permit fee for muskoxen can range from $500-$1,000. A guided caribou hunt can cost between $3,000-$6,000, whereas a guided muskox hunt can cost upwards of $10,000.
