Mountain lions can still be present and active during daylight hours, especially when they feel threatened or when they’re protecting their territory.

Safety Precautions for Daytime Hiking

While hiking during the day is safer, it’s still essential to take precautions to minimize the risk of a mountain lion encounter. When hiking in mountain lion territories, make noise while walking by talking, whistling, or wearing bear bells to alert the animal of your presence. Hike in groups whenever possible, as mountain lions are less likely to attack a group of people. Stay on designated trails and avoid hiking at dawn, dusk, or night when mountain lions are most active. Keep children close and within arm’s reach, as mountain lions may view them as potential prey.

Recognizing Mountain Lion Behavior

If you encounter a mountain lion, stay calm and try to appear as large as possible. Avoid direct eye contact, as this can be perceived as a challenge. Back away slowly while maintaining eye contact, but do not turn your back on the animal. If the mountain lion approaches, try to intimidate it by making loud noises or using any available objects as a deterrent. In the unlikely event of a physical attack, fight back with any available objects, such as hiking poles, sticks, or rocks, and aim for the animal’s face, eyes, and nose.
