Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to carefully remove any tangles or debris that may be caught in the mesh.

Re-Tightening or Re-Weaving Mesh

If you find any damaged or loose sections of mesh, repair them as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration. Use a needle and thread to re-weave the affected area, making sure to match the original mesh pattern as closely as possible. If the damage is extensive, consider re-weaving the entire section or replacing the net altogether. For a gill net, re-tightening the mesh can be achieved by gently pulling on the floats and sinkers, while for a dip net or seine, re-weaving may be necessary.

Cleaning and Storing Fishing Nets

After each use, clean your fishing net to remove any fish scales, blood, or other debris that may be caught in the mesh. Rinse the net with fresh water and allow it to dry before storing it in a clean, dry place. Avoid hanging your net in direct sunlight or over a heat source, as this can cause the mesh to degrade over time. For a primitive fishing net constructed from natural materials like twine or cordage, consider storing it in a way that allows the fibers to relax and return to their natural state, such as by folding or rolling the net.
