Choosing the Right Metal Container

When it comes to storing water in metal containers, it’s essential to select a container made from food-grade materials, such as stainless steel (18/8 or 304) or tin-free steel. Avoid containers made from galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper, as they can react with water and leach toxic substances. A good rule of thumb is to choose a container with a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm to prevent denting and ensure durability.

Preparing the Container for Water Storage

Before filling the metal container with water, ensure it’s properly cleaned and sanitized to prevent bacterial growth and contamination. Use a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 9 parts water to clean the container, then rinse it thoroughly with clean water. Next, sanitize the container by submerging it in boiling water for 10-15 minutes or using a sanitizing solution, such as bleach. Allow the container to air dry completely before filling it with water.

Storage and Maintenance

When storing water in metal containers, keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The ideal storage temperature is between 40°F and 60°F (4°C and 15°C). Regularly inspect the containers for signs of rust, corrosion, or contamination, and replace them as needed. Always use a clean and sanitized container to dispense water, and consider adding a water treatment tablet or filter to ensure the water remains safe to drink.
