Poor Ventilation and Drainage

Proper ventilation and drainage are essential for a functional outhouse. A common mistake is to build the outhouse on a slope that directs water towards the structure, causing it to accumulate around the base. This can lead to erosion, water damage, and pest infestations. To avoid this, dig the outhouse foundation on a slight incline, allowing water to drain away from the structure. A minimum slope of 1-2% is recommended. Additionally, ensure that the outhouse has adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of odors and moisture. A 12-inch diameter vent pipe should be installed at least 12 feet away from the outhouse to provide sufficient airflow.

Inadequate Water Management

Water management is critical in outhouse design. A common mistake is to install a single drainpipe that can become clogged or overwhelmed by heavy use. To avoid this, install multiple drainpipes (at least two) that direct water away from the outhouse.
