Choosing the Right Call

When hunting turkeys in swamps, you’ll need a call that can cut through the dense vegetation and reach the birds. A good diaphragm call or mouth call can produce the high-pitched yips and chirps that hens use to communicate with each other. Look for a call that produces a loud, clear sound, such as the Hey Boy diaphragm call or the Hatcher’s Real Thing mouth call. Practice your calling skills before the hunt to ensure you can produce the right sounds.

Decoy Placement and Setup

To set up an effective decoy spread in a swamp, look for a spot where turkeys are likely to congregate, such as a food source or a roosting area. Use 3-5 decoys, including a hen and some jakes (young turkeys), to create a convincing setup. Place the decoys in a natural-looking arrangement, with the hen decoy about 10-15 yards from the other decoys. Use a blind or cover to conceal yourself from the turkeys, and be prepared to move quietly if you need to get into position.

Movement and Stealth

In a swamp, movement can be your greatest enemy. Turkeys have excellent eyesight, and they can spot a hunter from a distance. To avoid spooking the birds, move slowly and quietly through the vegetation, using a push pole or a quiet boat to get into position if necessary. Keep a low profile, and avoid making sudden movements that could alert the turkeys to your presence. When you’re in position, take your time and wait for the turkeys to come to you.
