Planning and Preparation

To construct a quinzhee shelter, start by gathering snow and finding a suitable location. Look for an area with deep, dense snow, ideally at least 2-3 feet deep. Clear the area of any debris and create a circle with a diameter of about 10-15 feet. This will be the base of your quinzhee shelter.

Construction Techniques

Begin by piling the snow into a large heap, using a snow shovel or your hands to gather and stack the snow. Start at the center and work your way outward, creating a dome-shaped structure. As you add more snow, use your shovel or a stick to shape the walls and create a smooth surface. Aim for a height of about 6-8 feet, with a door and window space at the front. Use a rope or a stick to create a ventilation hole at the top of the shelter.

Finishing Touches

Once the quinzhee shelter is built, use a tarp or a space blanket to cover the door and create a makeshift entrance. You can also add additional insulation, such as pine boughs or dry leaves, to the walls and floor to keep the shelter warm and dry. Finally, use a shovel to create a snow trench around the shelter, about 6-8 inches deep, to help keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
