Is Dogbane Suitable for Creating Emergency Gear for Backpackers?

Utilizing Dogbane Fibers

Dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum) is a perennial herb found throughout much of North America, known for its strong and durable fibers. These fibers can be harvested from the plant’s stem, which is typically 3-6 feet tall and 1/4 inch in diameter. To harvest the fibers, cut the stem near the base, and then scrape off the outer bark and any excess material. Next, soak the fibers in water for several hours to make them more pliable, and then use a technique called “retting” to break down the pectins that hold the fibers together. This can be done by submerging the fibers in water for 1-2 weeks, or by using a mechanical retting process.

Preparing Dogbane Cordage

Once the fibers have been harvested and processed, they can be used to create cordage, netting, and other essential items. To create cordage, begin by twisting two or three strands of dogbane fibers together, and then continue to twist and add more strands until the desired thickness is achieved. This process can be repeated to create a variety of cordage diameters, ranging from thin thread-like fibers to thicker ropes. As a general rule, a good cordage should have a minimum diameter of 1/8 inch to be effective for most applications.

Safety Considerations

While dogbane is a viable resource for creating emergency gear, there are some safety considerations to be aware of. Dogbane contains a toxic compound called apocynin, which can cause skin irritation and other adverse reactions in some individuals. When handling dogbane, be sure to wear protective gloves and eyewear, and avoid ingesting or applying the plant’s sap to the skin. In addition, be aware of any allergies or sensitivities you may have before using dogbane fibers.
