The fast-flowing water provides a stable food supply, consisting mainly of aquatic insects and small crustaceans.

Saltwater Habitat Utilization

Although Harlequin Ducks primarily inhabit freshwater habitats, they may venture into saltwater areas, particularly during migration and wintering periods. In these cases, they tend to stay in areas with brackish water, such as estuaries and coastal bays, where the salt concentration is lower. This adaptation allows them to access food sources and avoid harsh saltwater conditions.

Breeding and Nesting Habits

Female Harlequin Ducks choose a nest site that meets specific requirements, including a gravelly or rocky substrate and a relatively flat area. They often select sites near fast-moving water and may use existing depressions or ledges. The nesting process typically occurs in late April to early June, with the female laying 2-6 eggs and incubating them for approximately 28 days.
