The optimal moisture content for firewood is around 20%, and a vertical split log will have a lower moisture content due to its increased surface area. This is because the split log allows for better air circulation and drying, which reduces the risk of mold and decay. To further enhance the efficiency of your firewood, aim to split logs in the summer or early fall, when the moisture content is naturally lower.

Firewood Arrangement

When constructing a fire using a vertical split log, arrange the logs in a teepee shape or a crisscross pattern. This allows for good airflow and a controlled burn. Place a few dry tinder sticks at the base of the teepee, then add larger logs of kindling, and finally add the vertical split logs.
