Assemble a winter car emergency kit containing the following items: a first aid kit with basic supplies like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers; a flashlight with extra batteries; warm blankets or emergency bivvy sacks; a battery-powered radio and/or a NOAA Weather Radio; a manual can opener; and non-perishable snacks like energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits. Include a whistle to signal for help, and a fire starter kit with matches, a lighter, or a firesteel. Don’t forget a spare change of warm clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Vehicle Preparation

Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready by checking the following: tire pressure, tread depth, and spare tire condition; battery health and charging system function; antifreeze level, engine oil, and coolant levels; and windshield wiper condition and winter fluid for the windshield washer. Keep a small shovel, sand or cat litter, and a reflective triangle or road flares in your kit for traction and visibility. Consider installing a tow strap, tow hooks, and a block heater for added safety and convenience.

Navigation and Communication

In the event of an emergency, stay informed with a paper map or GPS device, and a list of emergency contact numbers. Bring a portable charger for your phone or other devices, and a set of jumper cables and a multimeter for jump-starting your vehicle. Keep a small notebook and pen for recording important information, and a small container for storing small items like coins or a paper clip for emergency repairs.
