When searching for pheasants in your hunting area, pay attention to the landscape and terrain features that attract these birds. Look for areas with dense vegetation, such as agricultural fields, hedgerows, and woodland edges, as these provide cover and food for pheasants. Late season birds often congregate around these areas, especially if they are near water sources or feeding grounds. Observe the terrain for pheasant tracks, which typically show a distinctive two-toed print with a long toe and two shorter toes. Measure the tracks to confirm: pheasant tracks are usually around 1.5-2 inches long and 1-1.5 inches wide.

Pheasant Calls and Behavior

Pheasants can be identified by their loud, shrill calls, which often sound like “k-k-k-k” or “kuh-kuh-kuh.” Listen for these calls, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when birds are most active. Observe pheasant behavior, too: they often roost in trees or thick vegetation, especially during the late season. Watch for birds flying between roosting sites and feeding areas, or flushing from cover when approached by hunters.

Group Pushes and Walking Techniques

For successful pheasant hunting, it’s essential to move quietly and deliberately through the terrain. Use a group push technique to cover more ground and flush birds from cover. Divide your hunting party into two groups: a “push” group, which creates a disturbance and flushes birds, and a “cover” group, which follows behind and is prepared to shoot when birds are exposed. When walking through dense cover, use the “heel-to-toe” method to distribute your weight evenly and minimize noise. Walk slowly, keeping your weight centered and your eyes scanning the terrain for signs of pheasants.
