Panel Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning of marine solar panels is essential to maintain their efficiency and prevent corrosion. Use a soft-bristled brush or a cloth to gently remove any dirt, salt, or debris from the panels. Avoid using high-pressure washes or abrasive materials that can damage the panels’ thin-film coating. For more aggressive cleaning, use a mixture of water and a mild soap solution. Clean the panels at least once a week, or more frequently if exposed to harsh marine environments. Clean the frame and mounting hardware with a wire brush to prevent corrosion.

Controller and Electrical System Maintenance

Inspect the solar charge controller, battery management system (BMS), and other electrical components regularly for signs of wear or damage. Check the fuses and circuit breakers to ensure they are functioning properly. Replace any worn-out or damaged components to prevent system failures. Use a multimeter to verify the voltage and current readings at the controller and battery terminals. Check the system’s grounding and bonding connections to ensure they are secure and not corroded.

Battery Maintenance and Equalization

Deep cycle batteries require regular equalization to maintain their health and capacity. Connect the battery equalizer to the battery bank and set the equalization time to around 2-3 hours. Monitor the battery voltage and current during the equalization process to prevent overcharging or undercharging. Use a digital multimeter to check the battery state of charge (SOC) and ensure it is within the recommended range. Clean the battery terminals and cables to prevent corrosion and ensure good electrical connections.
