Quick Answer
As a hunter, it's essential to know how to recognize and respond to choking emergencies, which can occur due to food or other objects getting stuck in the airway. Knowing the Heimlich maneuver can save a life in a split second. Choking can happen to anyone, regardless of age or experience.
Understanding the Risks
Choking is a leading cause of preventable deaths in hunting scenarios, often resulting from consuming food that is poorly chewed or swallowed. Hunters should be aware of the risks associated with eating on the go, consuming high-fiber foods, or drinking while walking. According to the American Red Cross, you should always supervise children and inexperienced hunters when they’re eating, and encourage them to sit down while consuming food.
Performing the Heimlich Maneuver
The Heimlich maneuver is a lifesaving technique that involves applying pressure to the diaphragm to help dislodge an object blocking the airway. For adults and children over 1 year, stand behind the choking person and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it just above the navel, and then grab your fist with your other hand. Push inward and upward to help dislodge the object. For infants under 1 year, sit down with the baby facing up and support their head. Place your thumb on the center of their chest, just above the nipple line, and push inward and upward. Repeat this motion until the object is dislodged.
First Aid for Choking Victims
If the person is unconscious, not breathing, or has no pulse, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Begin CPR by performing 30 chest compressions followed by two breaths. Continue CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive. If the person is conscious and breathing, continue to apply the Heimlich maneuver until the object is dislodged. After the object is removed, check the person’s airway, breathing, and circulation (ABCs) and provide further first aid as needed.
