However, equalization should not be performed too frequently, as it can cause damage to the battery if done too often.

Charging and Equalization Techniques

For lead-acid batteries, it’s recommended to perform equalization every 1-3 months, depending on the depth of discharge (DOD) and the type of battery. If the battery is subjected to a DOD of 50% or more, equalization should be performed every month. It’s also essential to ensure that the battery is charged to a full state of charge (100%) before performing equalization. This usually takes around 2-4 hours, depending on the charger’s capacity. During equalization, the voltage should be raised to 14.4-15.0 volts for 2-4 hours to ensure complete desulfation.

Monitoring and Maintaining Battery Health

To prevent sulfation, it’s essential to monitor the battery’s state of charge, DOD, and overall health. This can be done using a battery monitor or by performing regular load tests. It’s also crucial to keep the battery terminals clean and free of corrosion to ensure proper charging and discharging. Additionally, it’s recommended to perform a full charge cycle every 1-2 months to ensure the battery is fully charged and desulfated. This can be achieved by leaving the battery connected to the charger for an extended period or by using a trickle charger to maintain the battery at a full state of charge.
