When eating outdoors, it’s essential to handle food safely to prevent foodborne illnesses. Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing and consuming food, and make sure to store perishable items like meat, dairy, and eggs in insulated containers to keep them at a safe temperature. This is especially crucial when camping or backpacking, where access to clean water and refrigeration may be limited. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of your stored food and drinks, aiming for temperatures below 40°F (4°C) to prevent bacterial growth.

Identifying and Avoiding Hazards

When choosing a spot to eat outdoors, be aware of potential hazards like poisonous plants, steep drop-offs, and wildlife. Research the area beforehand to identify any risks and take necessary precautions. For example, if you’re in an area with poison ivy or oak, wear long sleeves and pants to prevent skin contact. If you’re near a body of water, be cautious of steep drop-offs and slippery rocks. When eating in areas with wildlife, keep a clean eating area and store food and trash in airtight containers to avoid attracting animals.

Responding to Emergencies

In the event of a medical emergency, such as a choking or allergic reaction, having a plan in place can be lifesaving. Learn the Heimlich maneuver and practice it with a friend or family member. If you’re with someone who is choking, stand behind them and wrap your arms around their waist, then use your fist to perform a quick upward thrust.
