Quick Answer
If the Heimlich maneuver doesn't work, perform five back blows between the shoulder blades, followed by five abdominal thrusts, and repeat this sequence until the object is dislodged. If you're alone, call 911 or your local emergency number. If you're with someone, have them perform the sequence while you call for help.
Back Blows
Perform five back blows by standing behind the person and placing the heel of your hand just above the person’s belly button. Use the heel of your hand to deliver a quick, firm blow between the shoulder blades. Repeat this sequence five times. The goal is to create force that may dislodge the object. If the back blows are successful, the person should be able to cough up the object.
Abdominal Thrusts
If the back blows are unsuccessful, perform five abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the person with your arms wrapped around their waist, and with one hand at the top of their belly and the other at the bottom, perform a quick upward thrust. Repeat this sequence five times. The abdominal thrusts help to create pressure in the chest, which may dislodge the object.
When to Call for Help
If you’re alone, start calling 911 or your local emergency number immediately. If you’re with someone, have them perform the back blows and abdominal thrusts while you call for help. If the person is unconscious, not breathing, or has no pulse, start CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if you’re trained to do so.
