How to Properly Fold a Poncho for Shelter Use?

Folding the Poncho

To create a compact poncho shelter, start by laying the poncho flat on the ground with the opening facing upwards. Next, fold the left and right sides of the poncho towards the center, ensuring the edges align. This will create a rectangular shape with the folded sides as the base.

Creating a Shelter Frame

Using the folded poncho, create a sturdy frame by leaning two sticks against each other, forming an ‘A’ shape, and attaching the folded poncho to the top of the frame using rope or twine. The sticks should be positioned at an angle to create a sloping roof, allowing water to run off.

Securing the Shelter

To secure the shelter, use additional sticks to create a perimeter around the frame, ensuring it is snug against the ground. Use more rope or twine to tie the sticks together, creating a stable structure. Finally, use rocks or weights to weigh down the edges of the poncho, preventing it from flapping in the wind.
