Why do pronghorn prefer certain waterholes over others?

Habitat Requirements

Pronghorn are highly discerning when it comes to selecting waterholes, and their preferences are largely driven by the need for adequate habitat and escape routes. Research has shown that pronghorn tend to favor waterholes with a mix of grasses and forbs, and those that are situated near escape routes such as draws or canyons. This allows them to quickly flee from predators while also accessing a reliable source of water and forage.

Water Quality and Availability

In addition to habitat requirements, pronghorn also prefer waterholes with high water quality and sufficient volume to support them throughout the dry season. Studies have found that pronghorn tend to avoid waterholes with high levels of salinity or turbidity, as these can make it difficult for them to access the water. They also prefer waterholes with a depth of at least 2-3 feet, as this allows them to easily access the water without becoming exhausted.

Thermoregulation and Water Selection

Pronghorn also select waterholes based on their ability to regulate their body temperature. In the summer months, they tend to favor waterholes that are shaded or have a high canopy cover, as this helps to reduce their body temperature and prevent heat stress. In the winter months, they tend to favor waterholes that are located in areas with lower elevations and more abundant snow cover, as this provides them with access to a reliable source of water and forage.
