What is Best Time to Start Fanning in the Morning?

Choosing the Right Fanning Position

To set up for a successful morning fan, find a spot with a clear line of sight to the roosting tree and a gentle to moderate breeze blowing from you towards the birds. This breeze will help carry the sound of your calls and make it easier for the turkeys to locate you. Position yourself 20-30 yards from the roosting tree, with a slight incline or elevated spot to provide a clear view of the surrounding area.

Timing and Body Language

Start fanning 1/4 to 1/2 hour before sunup, when turkeys are most active and vocal. Make sure you’re visible and in a prominent position, using body language to convey confidence and presence. Keep your gun or bow slung over your shoulder, and move slowly and deliberately to avoid startling the birds. When fanning, use a series of short, sharp yips and clucks to mimic the sounds of excited hens, and maintain a consistent pace and tone to keep the birds engaged.

Reading the Birds and Making the Shot

As the turkeys begin to move towards you, pay close attention to their body language and vocalizations. If they’re walking directly towards you, make sure to keep a safe distance and be prepared to make the shot. If they’re walking around you or not responding to the calls, it may be best to hold off on making the shot and continue to fan, using different calls and sounds to try and re-engage the birds. Remember to keep your wits about you, stay calm, and make a clean shot when the opportunity arises.
