Choosing the Right Plastic Bag

When selecting a plastic bag for a solar still, look for one made from a clear, waterproof material like a heavy-duty trash bag or a large ziplock bag. Avoid bags with holes or tears, as they can compromise the still’s efficiency. Opt for a bag that’s at least 1-gallon capacity to ensure sufficient water collection.

Preparing the Bag for the Still

To prepare the bag for use in a solar still, create a depression in the center by folding the bottom of the bag upwards and securing it with rocks or weights. This will form the water collection area. Then, place a small stone or a piece of charcoal in the depression to act as a catalyst for evaporation.

Setting Up the Still

Place the prepared plastic bag in a shallow hole or depression, with the folded bottom facing upwards. Add a small amount of water to the center of the bag, and cover the top with a clear plastic sheet or a glass jar to create a greenhouse effect. Weigh down the edges of the bag with rocks to prevent air from entering the still. As the sun heats the water, water vapor will rise and condense on the underside of the plastic sheet or glass jar, dripping into a collection container.
