Assessing the Situation

When responding to a wilderness emergency, it’s essential to quickly assess the situation and prioritize the patient’s needs. This includes evaluating the severity of the injury or illness, considering the patient’s overall health and medical history, and assessing the environment and available resources. Use the ABCDE approach to assess the patient: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure. This framework helps ensure that you address the most critical issues first. For example, if the patient is unconscious or showing signs of airway obstruction, you should prioritize establishing a secure airway.

Treating Common Injuries

In a wilderness setting, it’s common to encounter injuries such as lacerations, sprains, and fractures. When treating these injuries, follow the principle of the “ABCDE” approach and the “STOP the BLEED” technique to control bleeding. For lacerations, use sterile gloves, saline solution, and antibiotic ointment to clean and dress the wound. For sprains and strains, use the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. When treating fractures, use the “ABCDE” approach and the “Pillows and Sheets” technique to immobilize the affected limb.

Navigation and Communication

In a wilderness emergency, navigation and communication skills are crucial for accessing medical help and evacuation. Use a map, compass, and GPS device to navigate the terrain, and consider carrying a personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite phone in case of an emergency. When communicating with emergency services, use a two-way radio or satellite phone to report the patient’s location and condition. Provide clear and concise information to help emergency responders locate and assist the patient.
