The US Military’s Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) has established a list of approved tourniquets for use in combat and emergency situations. These tourniquets are designed to provide a quick and effective means of controlling bleeding from severe limb injuries, with the goal of preventing death from exsanguination. The approved tourniquets include the CAT Tourniquet, the SOF-T Tourniquet, and the Tactical Research Casualty Care Tourniquet (C-A-T).

Proper Application Techniques

Proper application of a tourniquet is critical to its effectiveness. The CoTCCC recommends applying a tourniquet as follows: first, identify the bleeding artery and locate the tourniquet; second, wrap the tourniquet around the limb, with the windlass (the turn handle) facing away from the wound; third, tighten the tourniquet by turning the windlass in a clockwise direction, until bleeding stops; and finally, secure the tourniquet with a Velcro strap to prevent it from loosening. It’s also essential to note that tourniquets should only be applied for a maximum of two hours, as prolonged use can lead to complications.

Importance of Training

Effective use of a tourniquet requires proper training and practice. The US Military provides its personnel with comprehensive training on the use of tourniquets, as well as other first aid techniques, to ensure that they are prepared to respond to emergency situations. Civilians, including first responders and medical professionals, should also receive training on the use of tourniquets, as they may be called upon to use them in emergency situations.
