How to properly care for a newly caught muskrat?

Handling and Initial Care

When handling a newly caught muskrat, wear gloves to prevent the transfer of scent and oils from your skin, which can cause the animal stress. If you plan to kill the muskrat, do so quickly and humanely, ideally using a sharp knife or a dedicated animal trap. After killing the muskrat, immediately bleed it to prevent spoilage and facilitate the processing of the hide.
