When hunting Puerto Rico doves, it’s crucial to have a reliable method for cooling and storing the birds. A good cooler with ice packs can maintain a temperature below 40°F (4°C) for several hours. For longer hunts, consider using a large, insulated bag with cold gel packs to keep the temperature stable. Aim to store the birds in a shaded area to prevent direct sunlight from warming the birds.

Handling and Processing

To keep the doves fresh, handle them gently to avoid injury and blood loss. Remove the birds from the cooler or bag and place them on a clean, dry surface. Use a sharp knife to make a swift cut at the base of the neck, then cut along both sides of the breastbone to release the innards. Remove the innards and gizzards, then rinse the birds under cold water to remove any debris.

Transportation and Storage Tips

When transporting doves, store them in a separate, ventilated container to prevent moisture buildup and keep the birds dry. If you’re hunting in a hot climate, consider using a portable fan to keep the area cool. During transportation, keep the birds in a shaded area and avoid sudden changes in temperature.
