Course Curriculum

WFR courses cover a comprehensive range of topics, including patient assessment, trauma care, environmental emergencies, and medical emergencies in remote settings. The course curriculum is based on the WMI’s or WEA’s standards and may include instruction on how to manage injuries such as spinal cord injuries, broken bones, and head trauma. Students will also learn how to assess and treat patients with medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, and allergic reactions.

Training Methods and Techniques

WFR training typically involves a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and scenario-based training. Students will participate in simulated emergency scenarios to practice their skills in assessing and treating patients under realistic conditions. They’ll also learn about various medical techniques, such as splinting, wound cleaning, and patient immobilization. Some WFR courses may also include instructor-led workshops on specific topics such as wilderness first aid for children and adults with disabilities.

Certification Process and Maintenance

Upon completing a WFR course, students will receive certification that’s valid for two years. To maintain certification, students must complete continuing education requirements, which typically involve taking a WFR refresher course or a WMI-approved continuing education course. WFR certification is recognized by many outdoor organizations and is often required for employment as a wilderness guide, expedition leader, or outdoor educator.
