To minimize encounters, stay at least 10-15 feet away from potential denning sites during peak activity hours (late morning to early afternoon).

Identifying Rattlesnake Sign

Familiarize yourself with rattlesnake sign: tracks, scat, and shed skins. Notice the distinctive, triangular-shaped tracks with a central indentation and the dark, rounded scat with a distinctive “tear-drop” shape. Be cautious when approaching areas with these signs, as they often indicate a nearby den or foraging route.

Avoiding Rattlesnake Habitat During Peak Activity

Rattlesnakes are most active in warmer temperatures (above 75°F) and usually hibernate during cooler months (December to February). When venturing into desert habitats, plan your activities during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or late afternoon) to reduce the likelihood of encounters. Avoid tall grass, rocky outcroppings, and dense shrubs, as these areas tend to attract rattlesnakes.
