What are first steps to take if carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected?

April 5, 2026

Quick Answer

Immediately move the person to fresh air, call 911 or your local emergency number, and administer oxygen if available. Avoid administering any medication without medical guidance. If the person is unresponsive, not breathing, or showing no signs of circulation, begin CPR.

Moving to Fresh Air

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning while stranded in a vehicle, act quickly. Open all doors and windows to ventilate the area. If the vehicle is not moving, turn off the engine and do not attempt to open the hood. This can lead to an explosion due to the build-up of pressure. Move the person to a safe location outside the vehicle, at least 10-15 feet away from the vehicle.

Administering Oxygen and CPR

If available, provide the person with oxygen at the recommended flow rate (6-12 liters per minute). Do not use a bag-valve-mask (BVM) device unless you are trained to do so. If the person is unresponsive, not breathing, or showing no signs of circulation, begin CPR. Start with 30 chest compressions followed by two breaths, and continue at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.

Calling for Help

Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Provide the dispatcher with the location and situation, and follow their instructions. If the person is conscious, ask them to stay on the phone and provide information about their symptoms. If the person is unresponsive, stay on the line and provide information about their condition, including any attempts at CPR.
